Chemistry Tutor Scotland

Expert tuition which builds confidence and help students excel in exams

FAQ

Below are common questions students and parents ask about chemistry tutorials.

If you have additional questions, please contact me for more information.

Do you offer in person or online tutorials?

Both. Most students have online tutorials as then they are not limited to finding a tutor who lives close by. However, if you are close enough to travel (I live near Stirling) I offer in person tutorials. Please contact me for more information.

How are tutorials structured?

Each tutorial will be tailored to your needs but will broadly have the following structure:
1. An opportunity to ask questions about what you have been studying.
2. Looking at any areas highlighted from last week’s homework.
3. Working on a pre-agreed area of the course. This will include covering theory, worked examples, question practice.

How much does it cost?

Each tutorial costs £40/hr. This price includes the hour tutorial, all of the preparation and marking of set homework.

Payment is made in advance of the tutorial, via bank transfer.

How often are tutorials?

This is up to you, but most students have 1-2 hours each week.

How does online tutoring work?

Online tutorials take place on MS Teams, using OneNote. Both these Microsoft products are free to use. You will have your own OneNote notebook, which will include notes from tutorials, additional resources, questions and support materials, which they can access at any time.

Do you offer group tutorials?

I do not regularly schedule group tutorials. The reason for this is that my tutorials are tailored to student’s needs. Students at different schools will be studying different topics are different times. However, if you are a group of students (most likely from the same school/class) and are looking for group tuition the please get in touch. In this situation I offer group tutorials (up to 3 students) and the cost is £30/hr each.

Do you offer a trial lesson?

Yes, you can choose from either a free 30 minute introduction or an hour tutorial at half price. In my experience most people choose the latter as it provides time to actually cover some chemistry rather than just make introductions and explain how tutorials will work.

Do you offer tutorials at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level?

Yes, I offer tutorials for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher chemistry.

Do you tutor subjects other than chemistry?

No. I am a qualified chemistry teacher, and this is my area of expertise. My priority is providing a meaningful and enriching experience for students, so I only offer tutoring in chemistry.

I am crashing Higher chemistry. Will tutoring help?

Definitely. Tutoring will really help as it will allow you to study the material from the National 5 course that you need and link this to your Higher course. There is usually not time for you to do this in class and often this knowledge is assumed. Tutoring will support you in plugging these gaps and help you understand the Higher material.

I am studying GCSEs or A levels. Do you offer tutorials for these?

Yes, of course. I have taught both courses and marked for Edexcel (Pearson) for many years. Get in touch via the contact form and let me know which level and exam board you are studying.

What experience do you have of the Scottish Education system?

I am an experienced teaching, and have worked in Scottish Education since 2002. During this time I have taught pupils at all levels and have extensive experience teaching National Qualifications and preparing pupils for exams. I also have a range of experience working with the SQA. Consequently I have a deep knowledge and understanding of course specifications and marking exam.

What are your qualifications?

I have a MChem (first class) from University of Oxford, which is also where I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). I have taught in Scotland since 2002 and am fully registered with the GTCS. In summer 2025 I completed a MSc in Education.

What about PVG checks and references?

I am member of the PVG scheme and can provide details if required.

Professional and character references are also available.
